Those who want to get away for a fun weekend with the family or friends can turn to the new 2014 Kawasaki Teryx4 800, a four-passenger sport side-by-side vehicle which promises a combination of reliability, proven performance, roomy accommodations, and a high level of functionality. It was made to explore rugged terrain more quickly, easily, and more conveniently than ever before.
New, more powerful engine
Compared with the first two editions of the Teryx4, the liquid-cooled, fuel-injected, four-stroke, SOHC V-twin engine received a boost in displacement from 749 cc to 783 cc, while the compression ratio increased from 9.3:1 to 10.7:1. As a result, the 2014 Kawasaki Teryx4 800 produces 57 hp (+4) at 6,750 rpm and 47 lb-ft of torque (+4.5) at 5,500 rpm, yet achieves a 20% improvement in fuel economy, the manufacturer says. Towing capacity stays at 590 kg (1,300 lbs).
Power goes through a dual-range CVT with reverse that uses a centrifugal clutch and a shaft final drive. The electronic 4WD system allows drivers to select between three different drive modes depending on the situation: 2WD for sporty performance, 4WD for enhanced traction and relatively light steering, and 4WD Lock for maximum traction.
By the way, the available Electric Power Steering (EPS) system on the 2014 Kawasaki Teryx4 800 helps provide low-effort steering for navigating through the most adverse conditions with ease -- especially with a tight turning radius of 5.1 m.
Upgraded suspension
While the vehicle retained virtually the same exterior dimensions, ground clearance (281 mm) and curb weight (around 700 kg) as the outgoing model, it's built on what Kawasaki calls a "Double-X reinforcement type" tubular carbon-steel frame. Both the front suspension (202 mm of travel) and rear suspension (210 mm of travel) utilize a double-wishbone setup with all-new, gas-charged Fox Podium shocks that are fully adjustable for spring preload. Rear compression and rebound are also adjustable.
The base 2014 Kawasaki Teryx4 800 in Super Black starts at $15,699, which represents a mere $200 hike from last year. Models equipped with EPS come in Sunrise Yellow, Camo, and Lime Green or Burnt Orange trim. The Limited Edition stands out with automotive-grade paint, lightweight cast aluminum wheels, three-tone high-backed bucket seats, as well as body-coloured shock springs and suspension arms.
Competition mainly comes from the new Can-Am Maverick MAX 1000R and Polaris RZR 4 800.
