1,400 HP Dodge Viper Is World's Fastest Serpent With 253 MPH Top Speed

At its heart is an 8.5-liter twin-turbocharged V10 engine that has been tuned to deliver 1,400 hp of max output and 1,177 lb.-ft. of peak torque.

A stock Dodge Viper of any generation was created to be quick and fast off the factory floor. The fourth generation of the departed serpent has a claimed top speed of 202 mph, but I really would like to see a Viper dash to its fastest pace in person or for a world record, wouldn't you? Just recently an online video surfaced showing a 2006 Dodge Viper achieving a top speed of more than 250 mph. Let's check out the video.

Credible Testing On A 3-Mile Runway

The video was uploaded by Johnny Bohmer Proving Grounds (JBPG) on its YouTube channel, which has been doing Straight Line Aerodynamic Testing to fact-check the carmaker's claims of vehicle performance. It has done thousands of vehicle tests on its three-mile long concrete runway -- with 1000 ft. of asphalt runoff on each end -- in Merritt Island, Florida.

Johnny Bohmer times and speed-checks the vehicle tests using Garmin and Racelogic interior monitoring systems. The International Mile Racing Association (IMRA) sanctioning body performs the external time and speed checks, thereby making all tests by Johnny Bohmer credible and trustworthy. Tests are done in various distances: half-mile, 1 mile, 1.5 miles, 2 miles, 2.3 miles, 2.5 miles and 2.7 miles.

A Blue Hyper-Serpent

In the spotlight today is a blue 2006 Dodge Viper TT fitted with several prototype manufacturer parts. At its heart is an 8.5-liter twin-turbocharged V10 engine that has been tuned to deliver 1,400 hp of max output and 1,177 lb.-ft. of peak torque. This much power is sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission. And yes, this is a street-legal third-generation Viper, with a curb weight of 3,480 lbs.

The test was done on January 18, 2020, and the Dodge Viper was made to cover a test distance of 2.7 miles, which is more than enough concrete to allow the serpent to reach its top speed. At the time of the test, the wind was blowing 13 mph south-southeast, which is against the direction the Viper was heading (north). But that didn't matter.

Fastest Viper In The World

During the 2.7-mile test, the 2006 Dodge Viper was able to record a top speed of 252.588 mph. This makes the blue serpent the fastest Viper in the world. It is around 5 mph faster than the previous record-holder, a Dodge Viper Striker that went as fast as 247 mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats in 2001. If there are faster Dodge Vipers out there, I think it's time for them to stake their claim.
